1022 UTC  |  19 February  |  Posn: 06-09.00 N 119-39.00 E  |  20nm North of Pearl Bank, Philippines

The bulk carrier Giang Hai was attacked by armed pirates in Sulu Sea on 20 nautical miles north off Pearl Bank in Tawi-Tawi, Philippines. The vessel was approached by motor boat with heavy armed men, who tried to cross the route of the bulker. The crew changed course and headed the bulk carrier Giang Hai to northeast Borneo, but pirates opened fire shooting to the deck and bridge. 1 seamen was killed during the attack, but the crew retreated and the pirates took control over the ship. The kidnapped 7 seamen and fled with their boat in north direction. The other Vietnamese sailors were alive and without injuries. The gunmen destroyed some of the ship's equipment, but the 10 remaining crew members managed to sail the ship. The crew raised alarm and at the scene arrived personnel of the Philippine Coast guard and police.
