(1) Incident Type : SUSPICIOUS APPROACH |  Vessel Type: TANKER
1810 UTC | 10 February | Posn: 01-16.17N 104-14.72E | Singapore Strait

A tanker was approached whilst underway in the Eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme. Whilst passing a group of small fishing vessels, 1 fishing vessel started to approach the tanker from the starboard quarter and came to within 0.1nm. Whilst the Master was monitoring the fishing vessel, the Vessel Traffic Information Service contacted the tanker to confirm if there were small boats in the area. When the Officer of the Watch confirmed the presence of the small boats, the Vessel Traffic information Service advised for anti-piracy measures to be exercised. The crew were instructed to muster inside the accommodation, the fire pumps were activated and alarm sounded, which resulted in the suspicious vessel aborting its approach.
